1.Getting started

Thank you for choosing Sufia. This guide takes you from an empty WordPress site to a finished news magazine built from Sufia's widget homepages. Read sections 1 and 2 first; the rest can be read in any order. Use the search box on the left to jump to any setting. Every name below is the exact label you see in WordPress.

Important: upload sufia.zip, not the whole ThemeForest download. Uploading the main package gives the error "The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet."

Requirements

ItemMinimumRecommended
WordPress6.0Latest version (Sufia 3.0 is tested up to 7.1)
PHP8.08.2 or newer (tested 8.2 - 8.5)
PHP memory limit128M256M (the demo import likes more memory)
max_execution_time60300 (for the demo import)
PermalinksAny setting except "Plain" Settings → Permalinks → "Post name".
Contact Form 7 and PHP 8.2: the newest Contact Form 7 needs PHP 8.3. On PHP 8.2 WordPress keeps (or installs) the last version that supports your PHP. Nothing in Sufia depends on the newest version.

Install the theme

  1. Go to Appearance → Themes and click Add New Theme, then Upload Theme.
  2. Click Choose File, select sufia.zip and click Install Now.
  3. Click Activate. A notice at the top now lists the plugins Sufia uses (next step).
Upload fails? If you see "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive", unzip sufia.zip and upload the sufia folder to wp-content/themes/ with FTP or your host's file manager, then activate it in Appearance → Themes.

Required and recommended plugins

After activation go to Appearance → Install Plugins (or click Begin installing plugins in the notice). Select the plugins, choose Install in Bulk actions and click Apply, then activate them the same way. All plugins come from WordPress.org.

1 Install a single plugin, or 2 select several and use Bulk actions.

Sufia 3.0 no longer needs ACF, Sticky Sidebar, Single Post Template or WP-PostViews: their features are now built into the theme. User Submitted Posts is no longer recommended; if you still use it, it keeps working (see the update notes below).

Updating from Sufia 1.x / 2.x to 3.0

  1. Make a backup of your site (files and database).
  2. Upload the new sufia.zip in Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme → Upload Theme and choose Replace active with uploaded. Or delete the old wp-content/themes/sufia folder by FTP and upload the new one.
  3. Your Theme Options, widgets, menus and posts stay as they are: the option name (sufia_option) and all widget settings are unchanged.
  4. Then you can deactivate and delete the old plugins that Sufia 3.0 replaces:
Old pluginReplaced byYour data
ACF (Advanced Custom Fields 4)The Post format media box on the post screenAudio URL, video URL and gallery images are read from the same fields.
Single Post TemplateWordPress post templates (Template in the post sidebar)Posts keep their style; the value is moved to the new field automatically.
Theia Sticky SidebarAppearance → Theme Options → Blog Settings → Sticky SidebarWhile the old plugin is still active the theme leaves sticking to it and shows a notice.
WP-PostViewsBuilt-in view counterThe same views numbers are kept and shown. If the plugin stays active it keeps counting (no double count).
Google+ closed in 2019. Sufia 3.0 hides its share button, top bar icon, author link and the "KT Google+ Follow" widget. Your saved settings are kept.

Child theme

If you want to change template files, use a child theme so updates do not overwrite your changes. A minimal child theme is a folder sufia-child with a style.css containing Template: sufia in its header. Theme Options, widgets and menus keep working with the child theme.

2.One-click demo import

The demo import makes your site look like the live demo at sufia.fekbd.com: posts, pages, authors, images, menus, the 10 widget homepages, the shop and the forums, plus the Theme Options.

Import step by step

  1. Activate Redux Framework (required). Activate WooCommerce and bbPress first if you also want the shop and forum demo content.
  2. Go to Appearance → Theme Options and open the Demo Importer tab.
  3. Click Import Demo on the Sufia Demo card and confirm. Keep the page open until the card shows Imported (one to five minutes).
1 Appearance → Theme Options → Demo Importer: click Import Demo.
1 Appearance → Theme Options → Demo Importer: click Import Demo.

What gets imported

  • Everything is downloaded from the demo site during the import (see below), so your server needs an internet connection.
  • About 80 posts in 9 categories, with five demo authors (name, photo, job title, bio and social links). Dates are refreshed at import time, so the newest post is about one hour old.
  • Images are downloaded from the live demo (sufia.fekbd.com) into your Media Library.
  • Pages: homepage one ... homepage ten, Authors List, Page with Sidebar, Contact, Typography, Shop / Cart / Checkout / My Account.
  • Menus, assigned to Top Menu, Main Menu, Footer Menu and Off Canvas Menu.
  • All widgets of the 10 homepages, the sidebars, the header banner and the footer. Widgets that WordPress put in a new site's sidebars are moved to Inactive Widgets.
  • Theme Options, and Settings → Reading → "homepage one" as the front page.
  • Products and forums (only when WooCommerce / bbPress are active).

Common problems

ProblemSolution
"Could not download ..." or "size / checksum mismatch"Your server could not fetch the demo data. Try again; if it keeps failing use the manual import below (Where the demo data comes from).
The import stops or images are missingRaise max_execution_time to 300 and the memory limit to 256M, then click Re-Import. Posts that already exist are skipped, missing images are added.
Homepage sections are emptyImport with the categories in place (the importer maps the demo categories to yours). If you renamed categories, open each widget in Appearance → Widgets and pick the category again.
"Hello world!" or WordPress sample widgets showThey only appear when the site was not new. Trash the sample post and remove extra widgets in Appearance → Widgets.
Front page is the blog listSettings → Reading → "A static page" → Homepage: "homepage one".
The demo import works best on a new WordPress installation. It never deletes your own content.

Where the demo data comes from / manual import

To keep the theme small, the demo data is not inside sufia.zip. When you click Import Demo, Sufia downloads it from https://sufia.fekbd.com/demo-data/3.0.0/ and checks every file (size and checksum) before anything is imported. If a download fails, nothing is imported and a message tells you why.

If your server cannot reach the demo site (some hosts block outgoing connections), import manually:

  1. Download sufia-demo-data-3.0.0.zip on your computer and unzip it (5 files: content.xml, widgets.txt, theme-options.json, categories.json, authors.json).
  2. With FTP or your host's file manager, create the folder wp-content/uploads/sufia-demo-data/3.0.0/ and upload the 5 files into it.
  3. Go back to Appearance → Theme Options → Demo Importer and click Import Demo. Sufia uses your uploaded files (they are checked the same way).
The demo images are still downloaded from the demo site. If that is blocked too, the content is imported without images; add your own featured images later.

3.Theme Options

4.The 10 widget homepages

Each Sufia homepage is a WordPress page that uses one of the page templates Template One ... Template Ten. The template decides the layout (full width or with sidebar, 66% + 33% columns ...). The content comes from widget areas: each template has its own areas in Appearance → Widgets, named "Template N ...". You fill them with Sufia's KT widgets.

Post views

Sufia counts views itself: one view per visitor per post and browser session, counted with a tiny script so it also works with page caching. Editors, administrators and search-engine bots are not counted. Views show as "1.2K views" in the post meta and the featured panels, and KT Popular Posts lists the most viewed posts. Old counts from WP-PostViews are kept.

Sticky Sidebar (Blog Settings, on by default) keeps the sidebar in view while you scroll long articles and homepages, below the admin bar. A sidebar taller than the screen scrolls first and then sticks at its bottom. It is off on screens under 992 px.

Scrolled single post: the sidebar stays in view.

11.WooCommerce and bbPress

Install and activate WooCommerce and/or bbPress (Appearance → Install Plugins). Sufia styles them; no extra settings are needed.

  • WooCommerce: shop, product, cart, checkout and account pages use Sufia's fonts and yellow buttons. Run the WooCommerce setup and choose the Shop / Cart / Checkout / My Account pages (the demo import sets them).
  • bbPress: forums and topics use the theme layout with the BBPress Sidebar widget area.
  • Link them from the Top Menu like the demo ("Shop", "bbPress").

12.Translation and RTL

All theme texts use the text domain sufia. The template is sufia/languages/sufia.pot.

  1. Easiest: install the free Loco Translate plugin, open Loco Translate → Themes → Sufia, add your language and translate.
  2. Or use Poedit: create sufia-xx_XX.po/.mo (for example sufia-de_DE.mo) from the .pot and put them in wp-content/languages/themes/.

Texts you type yourself (widget titles, Theme Options, menus) are translated where you typed them, or with WPML / Polylang string translation.

RTL: Sufia 3.0 does not include a right-to-left stylesheet. WordPress RTL languages work, but the layout keeps the left-to-right direction.

13.FAQ and troubleshooting

QuestionAnswer
My homepage shows the latest posts list, not the magazine layout.Set a page with a Template One...Ten as the front page in Settings → Reading.
A homepage section is empty. The widget's category has no posts, or the category was deleted. Open the widget and choose a category again, or switch to Show latest Posts.
Theme Options menu is missing.Activate the Redux Framework plugin. Without it the theme still works with its default settings.
Images look stretched or blurry.Upload images of at least 1050 px width. After changing themes, regenerate thumbnails with the free Regenerate Thumbnails plugin.
The widgets screen looks different from the screenshots.Sufia uses the classic widgets screen. If a plugin forces the block widget editor, deactivate that plugin or install the Classic Widgets plugin.
Views stay at 0 while I test.Views from logged-in editors and administrators are not counted. Test in a private window.
The search icon is not visible on my phone. That is by design: the top bar search is hidden under 480 px.
Where are my old ACF gallery images? In the Post format media box; Sufia reads the same field, nothing is lost.
Can I use the demo photos? No. The demo photos are for preview only and are downloaded from the demo server; replace them with your own images.

14.Changelog

3.0.0 - October 2026

  • Compatibility: PHP 8.0-8.5 and WordPress 6.x / 7.x - all PHP warnings, deprecations and the "translation loaded too early" notices fixed.
  • Fixed: fatal error (white screen) on fresh installs caused by the old bundled Sticky Sidebar plugin.
  • New built-in sticky sidebar (Theme Options > Blog & Single > Sticky Sidebar), replaces the Theia Sticky Sidebar plugin. If the old plugin is still active the theme leaves sticking to it.
  • Post format fields (audio URL, video URL, gallery) are built into the theme; ACF 4 is no longer needed. Same meta keys - existing posts keep their media.
  • Single post styles 2-5 are native WordPress post templates (Post > Template); the Single Post Template plugin is no longer needed. Posts that used it keep their style.
  • Fixed: related posts and archive/search grids no longer leave gaps when titles have different lengths.
  • Fixed: related posts (full width styles) now use the "Related posts number" option.
  • Security: escaping, sanitizing and nonces across widgets, templates and the user profile fields.
  • Updated libraries: Bootstrap 3.4.1, Font Awesome 4.7.0, Flickity 2.3.0, Pace 1.2.4; deprecated jQuery calls replaced (works without jQuery Migrate).
  • TGM Plugin Activation 2.6.1; plugins now installed from WordPress.org (Redux, WP AJAX Login and Register, Contact Form 7, WooCommerce, bbPress). User Submitted Posts and WP-PostViews are no longer used.
  • WooCommerce 11 and bbPress 2.6 checked with the theme styles.
  • Google+ (closed in 2019) hidden: share button, top bar icon, author link and follow widget. Saved settings are kept.
  • Demo import: the demo data is no longer bundled; it is downloaded from https://sufia.fekbd.com/ (versioned, size + checksum checked, clear error message, manual upload fallback).
  • Theme Options (option name sufia_option) unchanged - existing settings keep working.

2.0 - February 2018

  • Pagination on archive pages.
